ಭಾರತೀಯ ಮಹಾಕಾವ್ಯ ಮಹಾಭಾರತದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಕುರುಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಯುದ್ಧವು ಕುರು ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾದ ಒಂದು ಇಂಡೊ-ಆರ್ಯನ್ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಸೋದರಸಂಬಂಧಿಗಳ ಎರಡು ಗುಂಪುಗಳು ಅಂದರೆ ಕೌರವರು ಹಾಗು ಪಾಂಡವರ ನಡುವೆ ಹಸ್ತಿನಾಪುರದ ಸಿಂಹಾಸನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ರಾಜವಂಶೀಯ ಉತ್ತರಾಧಿಕಾರ ಹೋರಾಟದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡ ಒಂದು ಸಂಘರ್ಷವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅದು ಪ್ರತಿಸ್ಪರ್ಧಿ ಗುಂಪುಗಳ ಮೈತ್ರಿಕೂಟಗಳಾಗಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ ಅನೇಕ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿತ್ತು. ಯುದ್ಧದ ಸ್ಥಳ ಭಾರತದ ಆಧುನಿಕ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಹರಿಯಾಣಾದ ಕುರುಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವಾಗಿತ್ತು.[೮]
