ಈ ಇಲಾಖೆಯನ್ನು 1995 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಯಿತು, ಮತ್ತು 2000 ನೇ ಇಸವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೈಗಾರಿಕಾ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಇಲಾಖೆಯನ್ನು ವಿಲೀನಗೊಳಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಆದ್ಯತೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ-ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಉದ್ದೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಗಮನದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಕೈಗಾರಿಕಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಕ್ರಮಗಳ ಸೂತ್ರೀಕರಣ ಮತ್ತು ಅನುಷ್ಠಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಈ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಆಡಳಿತ ಸಚಿವಾಲಯಗಳು ಅವರಿಗೆ ನಿಗದಿಪಡಿಸಿದ ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಕೈಗಾರಿಕೆಗಳ ಉತ್ಪಾದನೆ, ವಿತರಣೆ, ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಮತ್ತು ಯೋಜನಾ ಅಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ, ಕೈಗಾರಿಕಾ ನೀತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ ಕೈಗಾರಿಕಾ ನೀತಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ಎಫ್‌ಡಿಐ ಹರಿವನ್ನು ಸುಗಮಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯೂ ಇದೆ. WPI - Wholesale Price Index (ಅಂದರೆ ಲೆಕ್ಕಾಚಾರ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಸಹ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದೆ ಸಗಟು ಬೆಲೆ ಸೂಚ್ಯಂಕ).

ಸ್ವಾಮ್ಯಪ್ರಮಾಣ, ವಿನ್ಯಾಸಗಳು, ಟ್ರೇಡ್‌ಮಾರ್ಕ್‌ಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸರಕುಗಳ ಭೌಗೋಳಿಕ ಸೂಚನೆಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಬೌದ್ಧಿಕ ಆಸ್ತಿ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳಿಗೆ ನೀತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಚಾರವು ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅವುಗಳ ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಮತ್ತು ರಕ್ಷಣೆಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಉಪಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.
