ವೆರಾ ಫ್ಲಾರೆನ್ಸ್ ಕೂಪರ್ ರೂಬಿನ್ (ಜುಲೈ ೨೩, ೧೯೨೮ - ಡಿಸೆಂಬರ್ ೨೫, ೨೦೧೬) ಅಮೇರಿಕನ್ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞರಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಅವರು ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿ ಪರಿಭ್ರಮಣ ದರಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವ ಪ್ರವರ್ತಕರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವಸ್ಸಾರ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಏಕೈಕ ಪದವಿಪೂರ್ವ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ವೃತ್ತಿಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿ, ರೂಬಿನ್ ಕಾರ್ನೆಲ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ ಮತ್ತು ಜಾರ್ಜ್‌ಟೌನ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪದವಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋದರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ಹಬಲ್ ಹರಿವಿನಿಂದ ವಿಚಲನಗಳನ್ನು ವೀಕ್ಷಿಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿಯ ಸೂಪರ್‌ಕ್ಲಸ್ಟರ್‌ಗಳ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಪುರಾವೆಗಳನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸಿದರು. ರೂಬಿನ್ ತನ್ನ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರಿಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಕಳೆದರು ಮತ್ತು ಮಹತ್ವಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷಿ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞರ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಹೆಸರುವಾಸಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರು ಅನೇಕರಿಗೆ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರವರ್ತಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಮತ್ತು ೨೦೧೫ ರಲ್ಲಿ ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಸೈನ್ಸ್ ಫೌಂಡೇಶನ್ ವೆರಾ ಸಿ. ರೂಬಿನ್ ಅಬ್ಸರ್ವೇಟರಿ ( ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಿನೊಪ್ಟಿಕ್ ಸರ್ವೆ ಟೆಲಿಸ್ಕೋಪ್ ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತ ರೂಪ: ಎಲ್‌ಎಸ್‌ಎಸ್‌ಟಿ) ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರ ಪರಂಪರೆಯನ್ನು ದಿ ನ್ಯೂಯಾರ್ಕ್ ಟೈಮ್ಸ್ ಕಾಸ್ಮಾಲಾಜಿಕಲ್ ಥಿಯರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ "ಕೋಪರ್ನಿಕನ್ -ಸ್ಕೇಲ್ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗೆ ನಾಂದಿ ಹಾಡಿದೆ" ಎಂದು ವಿವರಿಸಿದೆ. ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಜೀವನ[ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ]

ವೆರಾ ಕೂಪರ್ ಜುಲೈ ೨೩, ೧೯೨೮ ರಂದು ಪೆನ್ಸಿಲ್ವೇನಿಯಾದ ಫಿಲಡೆಲ್ಫಿಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಇಬ್ಬರು ಸಹೋದರಿಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಕಿರಿಯವರು. ಇವರ ಪೋಷಕರು ಪೂರ್ವ ಯುರೋಪಿನಿಂದ ಯಹೂದಿ ವಲಸೆಗಾರರು: ಪೆಸಾಚ್ ಕೊಬ್ಚೆಫ್ಸ್ಕಿ (ಫಿಲಿಪ್ ಕೂಪರ್) ಲಿಥುವೇನಿಯಾದ ವಿಲ್ನಿಯಸ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು (ಆಗ ಪೋಲೆಂಡ್ನ ಭಾಗ) ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಆಂಗ್ಲೀಕರಿಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಎಲೆಕ್ಟ್ರಿಕಲ್ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರ್ ಆಗಿ <re /> ಬೆಲ್ ಟೆಲಿಫೋನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಬೆಸ್ಸರಾಬಿಯಾದಿಂದ (ಇಂದಿನ ಮೊಲ್ಡೊವಾದಲ್ಲಿ ) ರೋಸ್ ಆಪಲ್ಬಾಮ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ವಿವಾಹವಾದರು. ಇವರು ಬೆಲ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ರೋಸ್ ಅವರು ಮದುವೆಯಾಗುವವರೆಗೂ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಕೂಪರ್ಸ್ ೧೯೩೮ ರಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಷಿಂಗ್ಟನ್ ಡಿಸಿ ಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳಾಂತರಗೊಂಡರು, [೧೧] ಅಲ್ಲಿ ೧೦ ವರ್ಷದ ವೆರಾ ತನ್ನ ಕಿಟಕಿಯಿಂದ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುವಾಗ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡಳು. [೧೨] "ಆಗಲೂ ನನಗೆ ಉತ್ತರಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಇತ್ತು" ಎಂದು ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಳು. "ನಾವು ಬಹಳ ಕುತೂಹಲಕಾರಿ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದೆ." [೧೩] ಅವರು ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ರಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಕಚ್ಚಾ ದೂರದರ್ಶಕವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದಳು ಮತ್ತು ಉಲ್ಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ವೀಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ಟ್ರ್ಯಾಕ್ ಮಾಡಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದಳು. [೧೪] [೧೫] [೧೬] ಅವರು ಕೂಲಿಡ್ಜ್ ಹಿರಿಯ ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಸೇರಿದರು, ೧೯೪೪ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದರು.

ಕೂಪರ್ ಅವರ ಅಕ್ಕ ರುತ್ ಕೂಪರ್ ಬರ್ಗ್ ಅವರು ವಕೀಲರಾದರು. ನಂತರ ಅವರು ಯುನೈಟೆಡ್ ಸ್ಟೇಟ್ಸ್ ಡಿಪಾರ್ಟ್ಮೆಂಟ್ ಆಫ್ ಡಿಫೆನ್ಸ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಆಡಳಿತಾತ್ಮಕ ಕಾನೂನು ನ್ಯಾಯಾಧೀಶರಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದರು. [೧೭]

ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ[ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ]

ಕೂಪರ್ ಅವರು ವಸ್ಸಾರ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪದವಿಪೂರ್ವ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸಲು ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟರು - ನಂತರ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಶಾಲೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರು ೧೮೬೫ [೧೮] ಅದೇ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಮಾರಿಯಾ ಮಿಚೆಲ್ ಅವರಿಂದ ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿ ಪಡೆದರು. ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ವೃತ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲು ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಾವಿದರಾಗಲು ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲಾ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಂದ ಅವಳು ಪಡೆದ ಸಲಹೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಿಸಿದಳು. [೧೯] ಅವರು ಫಿ ಬೀಟಾ ಕಪ್ಪಾ [೨೦] ಪದವಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದರು ಮತ್ತು ೧೯೪೮ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಸ್ನಾತಕೋತ್ತರ ಪದವಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದರು, ಆ ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಏಕೈಕ ಪದವೀಧರರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. [೨೧] [೨೨] ಅವರು ಪ್ರಿನ್ಸ್‌ಟನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಪದವಿ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಕ್ಕೆ ದಾಖಲಾಗಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದರು,ಆದರೆ ಅವರು ಲಿಂಗದ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ತಡೆಯಲಾಯಿತು.[೨೩] ಪ್ರಿನ್ಸ್‌ಟನ್ ಇನ್ನೂ ೨೭ ವರ್ಷಗಳವರೆಗೆ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರನ್ನು ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಪದವೀಧರ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯಾಗಿ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ರೂಬಿನ್ ಹಾರ್ವರ್ಡ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪವನ್ನು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರು ೧೯೪೮ ರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿವಾಹವಾದರು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಪತಿ ರಾಬರ್ಟ್ ಜೋಶುವಾ ರೂಬಿನ್ ಕಾರ್ನೆಲ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪದವಿ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ರೂಬಿನ್ ನಂತರ ಕಾರ್ನೆಲ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡರು ಮತ್ತು ೧೯೫೧ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾತಕೋತ್ತರ ಪದವಿಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದರು. [೨೫] [೨೬] ತನ್ನ ಪದವಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ೧೦೯ ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳ ಚಲನೆಯನ್ನು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಹಬಲ್ ಹರಿವಿನಿಂದ ವಿಚಲನಗಳ ಮೊದಲ ಅವಲೋಕನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದರು (ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳು ಪರಸ್ಪರ ಹೇಗೆ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿ ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತವೆ). [೨೭] [೨೮] [೨೯] ಅವರು ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿಯ ಡೈನಾಮಿಕ್ಸ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞ ಮಾರ್ಥಾ ಕಾರ್ಪೆಂಟರ್ ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ಫಿಲಿಪ್ ಮಾರಿಸನ್, ಹ್ಯಾನ್ಸ್ ಬೆಥೆ ಮತ್ತು ರಿಚರ್ಡ್ ಫೆನ್ಮನ್ ಅವರ ಅಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿದರು. [೩೦] [೩೧] ಒಂದು ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಧ್ರುವದ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳ ಕಕ್ಷೆಯ ಚಲನೆಯಿದೆ ಎಂಬ ತೀರ್ಮಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರು ಬಂದಿದ್ದರೂ, ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳು ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ ಎಂಬ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಯು ನಿಜವಾಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಾಕಿತು. ಅವರ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಯು ಸೂಪರ್ ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಟಿಕ್ ವಿಮಾನದ ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಪುರಾವೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಹ ಒದಗಿಸಿದೆ. ಈ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರು ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿದ ದತ್ತಾಂಶವು ಬಹಳ ವಿವಾದಾತ್ಮಕವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಗೋಚರವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಗರ್ಭಿಣಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಸಹ ಅಮೇರಿಕನ್ ಆಸ್ಟ್ರೋನಾಮಿಕಲ್ ಸೊಸೈಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸಲು ಅವರು ಹೆಣಗಾಡಿದರು, ಅವರನ್ನು ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತವಾಗಿ ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಗದವನ್ನು ಮರೆತುಬಿಡಲಾಯಿತು.

ಜಾರ್ಜ್‌ಟೌನ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ರೂಬಿನ್ ತನ್ನ ಪಿಎಚ್‌ಡಿಗಾಗಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪದವಿ, ಪದವಿಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದ ವಾಷಿಂಗ್ಟನ್, ಡಿಸಿ ಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಏಕೈಕ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯವಾಗಿದೆ. [೩೨] [೩೩] ಅವರು ಡಾಕ್ಟರೇಟ್ ಅಧ್ಯಯನವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದಾಗ ೨೩ ವರ್ಷ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನವಳಾಗಿದ್ದಳು ಮತ್ತು ಗರ್ಭಿಣಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಳು ಮತ್ತು ರೂಬಿನ್ಸ್ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಗುವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದಳು. [೩೫] ೧೯೫೪ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಂಡ ಅವರ ಪ್ರಬಂಧವು ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಂಡದ ಮೂಲಕ ಯಾದೃಚ್ಛಿಕವಾಗಿ ವಿತರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಬದಲು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡಿವೆ ಎಂದು ತೀರ್ಮಾನಿಸಿತು ಇದು ಎರಡು ದಶಕಗಳವರೆಗೆ ಇತರರು ಅನುಸರಿಸದ ವಿವಾದಾತ್ಮಕ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು.[೩೬] [೩೭] ತನ್ನ ಪದವಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನದ ಉದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಅವರು ಲಿಂಗಭೇದಭಾವವನ್ನು ವಿರೋಧಿಸಿದರು. ಒಂದು ಘಟನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಯಾಥೋಲಿಕ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾನಿಲಯದ ಆ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಹಿಳೆಯರಿಗೆ ಅವಕಾಶವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ, ಅವರ ಕಛೇರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಸಲಹೆಗಾರರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗಲು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅವಕಾಶವಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಮುಂದಿನ ಹನ್ನೊಂದು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ರೂಬಿನ್ ವಿವಿಧ ಶೈಕ್ಷಣಿಕ ಸ್ಥಾನಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರು ಮಾಂಟ್ಗೊಮೆರಿ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣಿತ ಮತ್ತು ಭೌತಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಬೋಧಕರಾಗಿ ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು. ೧೯೫೫ ರಿಂದ ೧೯೬೫ ರವರೆಗೆ ಅವರು ಜಾರ್ಜ್‌ಟೌನ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಸಹಾಯಕ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞರಾಗಿ, ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸಕರಾಗಿ (೧೯೫೯-೧೯೬೨) ಮತ್ತು ಖಗೋಳವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ಸಹಾಯಕ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾಗಿ (೧೯೬೨-೧೯೬೫) ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದರು. [೩೯] [೪೦] ಅವರು ೧೯೬೫ ರಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಷಿಂಗ್ಟನ್‌ನ ಕಾರ್ನೆಗೀ ಇನ್‌ಸ್ಟಿಟ್ಯೂಷನ್‌ಗೆ (ನಂತರ ಕಾರ್ನೆಗೀ ಇನ್‌ಸ್ಟಿಟ್ಯೂಟ್ ಆಫ್ ಸೈನ್ಸ್ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ) ಟೆರೆಸ್ಟ್ರಿಯಲ್ ಮ್ಯಾಗ್ನೆಟಿಸಂ ವಿಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಸದಸ್ಯರಾಗಿ ಸೇರಿದರು. [೪೧] ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ತನ್ನ ದೀರ್ಘಕಾಲದ ಸಹಯೋಗಿ, ವಾದ್ಯ-ತಯಾರಕ ಕೆಂಟ್ ಫೋರ್ಡ್ ಅನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾದರು. [೪೨] ಅವರಿಗೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿದ್ದ ಕಾರಣ, ಅವರು ತನ್ನ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಮನೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. [೪೩]

೧೯೬೩ ರಲ್ಲಿ ರೂಬಿನ್ ಜೆಫ್ರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾರ್ಗರೇಟ್ ಬರ್ಬಿಡ್ಜ್ ಅವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷದ ಸಹಯೋಗವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು, ಈ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಮ್ಯಾಕ್‌ಡೊನಾಲ್ಡ್ ಅಬ್ಸರ್ವೇಟರಿಯ ೮೨-ಇಂಚಿನ ದೂರದರ್ಶಕವನ್ನು ಬಳಸುವಾಗ ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳ ತಿರುಗುವಿಕೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಮೊದಲ ಅವಲೋಕನಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದರು. [೪೪] ಕಾರ್ನೆಗೀ ಇನ್ಸ್ಟಿಟ್ಯೂಟ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಕೆಲಸದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ರೂಬಿನ್ ೧೯೬೫ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲೋಮರ್ ವೀಕ್ಷಣಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವೀಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ಅರ್ಜಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು. ಕಟ್ಟಡವು ಮಹಿಳೆಯರಿಗೆ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ಸಹ [೪೫] ತನಗೆ ಲಭ್ಯವಿರುವ ಸೌಲಭ್ಯಗಳ ಕೊರತೆಯನ್ನು ಬದಿಗೊತ್ತಿ ತನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಮಹಿಳಾ ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ ಕೊಠಡಿಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದಳು. ಅವರು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ವೀಕ್ಷಿಸಿದ ಮೊದಲ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞರಾದರು. ಕಾರ್ನೆಗೀ ಇನ್‌ಸ್ಟಿಟ್ಯೂಷನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ರೂಬಿನ್ ಫೋರ್ಡ್‌ನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿ ಕ್ಲಸ್ಟರ್‌ಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತನ್ನ ವಿವಾದಾತ್ಮಕ ಪ್ರಬಂಧಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. [೫೧] ರೂಬಿನ್-ಫೋರ್ಡ್ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ೧೦೦ ಮಿಲಿಯನ್ ಬೆಳಕಿನ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಂಡದ ವಿಸ್ತರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾದ ಅನಿಸೊಟ್ರೋಪಿ, ಸುರುಳಿಯಾಕಾರದ ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳ ಅಧ್ಯಯನಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯಲಾಯಿತು. ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಆಂಡ್ರೊಮಿಡಾ ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿ ಅದರ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಮಾನತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಭೂಮಿಗೆ ಸಾಮೀಪ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. [೫೨] [೫೩] ವಿಶ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಲಕ್ಷಣ ಚಲನೆಯ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಯು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ವಿವಾದಾತ್ಮಕ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದನೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು, ಇದನ್ನು ಮೊದಲು ೧೯೭೬ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಯತಕಾಲಿಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಇದನ್ನು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಜ್ಞರು ತಳ್ಳಿಹಾಕಿದರು ಆದರೆ ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. [೫೬] ಈ ಜೋಡಿಯು ಕ್ವೇಸಾರ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತವಾಗಿ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಿದರು, ಇದನ್ನು ೧೯೬೩ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯಲಾಯಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಇದು ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಯ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಕ್ವೇಸಾರ್‌ಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿಯ ಚಲನೆಯನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಂತೆ ಖಗೋಳಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ವಿವಾದಾತ್ಮಕ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲು ರೂಬಿನ್ ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳ ತಿರುಗುವಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊರಗಿನ ವ್ಯಾಪ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು, ಬರ್ಬಿಡ್ಜ್‌ಗಳೊಂದಿಗಿನ ಅವರ ಸಹಯೋಗದಿಂದ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡಿತು. [೫೯] ಗೋಚರ ಬೆಳಕು ಮತ್ತು ಗಮನಿಸಿದ ಚಲನೆಯ ಆಧಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳ ಭವಿಷ್ಯ ಕೋನೀಯ ಚಲನೆಯ ನಡುವಿನ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಅವರು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಬಹಿರಂಗಪಡಿಸಿದರು. [೬೦] ಅವರ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಯು ಸುರುಳಿಯಾಕಾರದ ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳು ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ತಿರುಗುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂದು ತೋರಿಸಿದೆ, ಅವುಗಳ ಘಟಕ ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಗಳ ಗುರುತ್ವಾಕರ್ಷಣೆಯು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಹಿಡಿದಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ; ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಅವುಗಳು ಹಾಗೇ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತವೆ, ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ಕಾಣದ ದ್ರವ್ಯರಾಶಿಯು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಹಿಡಿದಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು ಇದು ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿ ತಿರುಗುವಿಕೆಯ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಾಯಿತು.

ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಮ್ಯಾಟರ್‌ಗಿಂತ ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಐದರಿಂದ ಹತ್ತು ಪಟ್ಟು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಡಾರ್ಕ್ ಮ್ಯಾಟರ್ ಹೊಂದಿರಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ರೂಬಿನ್ ಲೆಕ್ಕಾಚಾರಗಳು ತೋರಿಸಿವೆ. ರೂಬಿನ್‌ಗೆ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವೆಂದರೆ ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ ಪ್ರತಿ-ತಿರುಗುವಿಕೆಯ ವಿದ್ಯಮಾನ. ಕೆಲವು ಅನಿಲ ಮತ್ತು ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಗಳು ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿಯ ಉಳಿದ ತಿರುಗುವಿಕೆಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬ ಅವರ ಆವಿಷ್ಕಾರವು ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ವಸ್ತುವು ಒಂದೇ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಚಾಲ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಶ್ನಿಸಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿ ವಿಲೀನಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಗೆ ಮೊದಲ ಪುರಾವೆಯನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸಿತು. ಅದರ ಮೂಲಕ ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿಗಳು ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡವು. ೨೦೦೦ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸ್ಟ್ರೋನಾಮಿಕಲ್ ಸೊಸೈಟಿ ಆಫ್ ದಿ ಪೆಸಿಫಿಕ್‌ ಪಬ್ಲಿಕೇಶನ್ಸ್‌ಗಾಗಿ "ಒನ್ ಹಂಡ್ರೆಡ್ ಇಯರ್ಸ್ ಆಫ್ ರೋಟೇಟಿಂಗ್ ಗ್ಯಾಲಕ್ಸಿಸ್" ಎಂಬ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗೆಲಕ್ಸಿ ಚಲನೆಗಳ ಮೇಲಿನ ಕೆಲಸದ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಕುರಿತು ರೂಬಿನ್ ಅವರ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಇದು ರಾಯಲ್ ಆಸ್ಟ್ರೋನಾಮಿಕಲ್ ಸೊಸೈಟಿಯ ಚಿನ್ನದ ಪದಕವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದ ನಂತರ ಅವರು ೧೯೯೬ ರಲ್ಲಿ ನೀಡಿದ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸದ ರೂಪಾಂತರವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ೧೮೨೮ ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ಯಾರೋಲಿನ್ ಹರ್ಷಲ್ ಅವರು ಪದಕವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದ ೧೬೮ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ನಂತರದ ಗೌರವಾನ್ವಿತ ಎರಡನೇ ಮಹಿಳೆ.
