This template can be used to generate an infobox for a protected area. It is part of the Protected areas WikiProject.

Usage

The "basic usage" templates includes selected parameters which can be used to form a completely functional infobox. The "full usage" template includes all of the extra parameters which may be added. Either can be pasted into a new article. See below for working examples.

Parameter descriptions

This table describes all parameters which can be used in building infoboxes. Only the name parameter must be assigned a value.

Field nameDescription
nameRequired. The official name of the protected area. It will be displayed at the top of the infobox. In most cases this should be the same as the article name less any disambiguation. For example if the article title is Mount Washington (New Hampshire) then name=Mount Washington.
alt_nameIf there is a common English name for the area use for the name parameter. This parameter can be used to display the name in the local language or for an alternate English name if it is commonly used. If you would like to italicize the text use wiki markup.
iucn_categoryStrongly recommended. The IUCN category associated with the protected area. Valid values are Ia, Ib, II, III, IV, V, or VI. See IUCN Categories.
iucn_refA reference for the iucn_category.
logoThe logo of the area.
logo_uprightThe upright value of the logo.
logo_altThe logo alt text. See WP:ALT.
logo_captionThe caption that will appear below the logo.
imageThe name of an image file to be displayed. No special formatting is needed.
image_sizeCan be used to change the display width the image. The default and maximum value is 284px. Images with a horizontal orientation (landscape mode) will generally display well at the default setting. An image with vertical orientation (portrait mode) may need to be adjusted to 180px or 220px. For example image_size=200 and not image_size=200px.
image_altAlt text for the image, for visually impaired readers. See WP:ALT.
image_captionThe caption which will appear below the image if one is required.
mapThe name of the location map to be displayed. See Map display methods. To use a static image, use |map_image=
map_imageThe file name of a static map image to be displayed. To use a location map, use |map=.
map_widthWidth to display the map image in pixels. The default and maximum is 284, but usually the map should be much smaller. For example: map_width=200 (not map_width=200px). If a location map template is used the map size might be scaled automatically if no width is specified.
map_altAlternative text for the map image, see WP:ALT.
map_captionText to be displayed below the map image, if required.
AlternativeMapUse an alternative map for the location map, where available. For additional information, see Template:Location map#AlternativeMap parameter.
reliefWhen the geographical coordinates method is used (see Map display methods), any non-blank value (yes, 1, etc.) will cause the template to display a relief map image, where available. For additional information, see Template:Location map#Relief parameter.
labelA text message that will be displayed next to the marker. Works with label_position below.
label_positionSpecifies the position of a label with respect to the marker. This is not functional when using the XY method for map display. It must be assigned a value or no label will not display. Valid values are left, right, top and bottom. See label above.
markThe image to use for the marker. The default is Red pog.svg, unless map=us locator blank.svg in which case the default is Green pog.svg. See Template:Location map for more information.
marker_sizeThe display width of the marker image in pixels. The default value is 8.
mapframeAdd a {{Infobox mapframe}} map. See the documentation below in #Mapframe maps for more details on usage.
locationThe location of the protected area. Don't be too precise. County, state and country are good in the USA. If the area is within a city specify the city, state and country. If the area is in multiple counties just list the state and country. For areas in other countries adjust accordingly.
nearest_city
nearest_town		Recommended if the area is not within a city or town. It could be a city with a major airport or a large gateway town where supplies and lodging are available. Use the most appropriate parameter.
coordinates
coords		For the {{Coord}} template. The parameters |format=dms and |display=inline,title are recommended. Its coordinates can be used with the location map. (Unless a value for type: is provided, the template will automatically use type:landmark, or something that is set as geohack-type. See the {{Coord}} page for more info.)
coords_refCan be used with either coordinate display method above. Strongly recommended. Specify a citation for the coordinates using <ref>...</ref> tags.
geohack-typeSet the geohack type parameter for use with coordinates and mapframes. Defaults to 'landmark'. See Template:Coord#type:T for more information.
lengthLength of protected area, e.g., length of a trail. The {{Convert}} template should be used.
length_km
length_mi		Length of protected area, with automatic conversion to metric/imperial units.
widthWidth of protected area. Can be used with |length= to describe rough shape. The {{Convert}} template should be used.
width_km
width_mi		Width of protected area, with automatic conversion to metric/imperial units.
areaArea of the protected area. Usually in acres or square miles for US locations and hectares or square kilometres elsewhere. The {{Convert}} template should be used. Very small areas might be specified in square feet, square yards or square metres.

area_sqmi
area_acre
area_ha		Area of the protected area, with automatic conversion to metric/imperial units. Preferred to using bare |area=
area_refReference to reliable source for area value.
elevationElevation of the protected area.
dimensionsDimensions of the protected area.
designationThe legal protection offered to the park.

established		The date the protected area was created. See below. Use {{Start date}}. For example, for Yosemite National Park, use {{Start date|1890|10|1}}.
disestablishedThe date when the area became no longer protected, if any.

visitation_numThe number of visitors in a recent year if known.
visitation_yearThe year during which the number of visitors was counted.
visitation_refUsed with the visitation parameters above. Highly recommended. Specify the a citation for the visitation data using <ref>...</ref> tags.
governing_body
administrator
operator
owner		The agency or organization which controls or owns the protected area. See below.
world_heritage_siteThe year the protected area was designated a World Heritage Site. Few areas have this designation. If the article uses {{Infobox World Heritage Site}} then this parameter should not be used.
websiteThe official website using either {{Url}} or {{Official website}}
childSet to "yes" if this infobox is embedded inside another infobox.
moduleAnother infobox to place within this infobox. It will show up at the bottom. It needs to have its "embed" or "child" parameter set to 1 or yes, as appropriate.
module2A second embedded infobox.

IUCN Categories

Depending on the value of the iucn_category parameter, one of the following banners will be displayed below the name. Valid values are Ia, Ib, II, III, IV, V and VI. For more information read the IUCN protected area categories article. If you cannot find the correct code in a reliable source, leave blank.

IUCN category V (protected landscape/seascape)
IUCN category VI (protected area with sustainable use of natural resources)

Pushpin map

Below are the parameters used by Module:Location map to produce the pushpin map in this Infobox. These parameters are available for editors to set in articles that use this infobox.

Parameter Description Default
|pushpin_map= The map(s) to display. For example, specifying England will use the values for England in Module:Location map/data/England.Multiple maps can be shown by providing a list of map names separated by #. For multiple maps, the first is shown by default. A reader can select the others with radio buttons. N/A
|pushpin_caption= The text of a caption to be displayed below the map. If not provided a default caption will be generated. Multiple captions can be shown when separated by ## (that's two). Location within MAPNAME
|pushpin_relief= 0/false/off will cause the template to display the map defined as image (generally not a relief map). 1/true/on will cause the template to display the map defined as image1 (generally a relief map). Any non-zero numeric value such as 2 or 3 will display image2 or image3, if those images are defined. Any other non-empty value will cause display of image1. |pushpin_label= The text of the label to display next to the identifying mark; a wikilink can be used. You can enclose the label inside of {{Nowrap}} if you want to make sure that it stays on a single line. N/A
|pushpin_label_size= The font size to use for the label, given as a percentage of the normal font size (<100=smaller, >100=larger); the default size is 90. Do not include %. For example, use |pushpin_label_size=80, not |pushpin_label_size=80%. If set to 0, the label is only displayed when the user hovers over the mark. 90
|pushpin_label_position= The position of the label relative to the identifying mark; valid values are left, right, top, bottom and none. This defaults to either left or right, depending on the coordinates of the marker and its position relative to the right border of the map image. Mapframe maps

  • Basic {{Infobox mapframe}} parameters:
    • mapframe – Specify yes or no to show or hide the map, overriding the default. Default: no, but also modified by onByDefault
      • Internal onByDefault parameter: yes, unless any of these parameters are present: |map=, |image_map=, |map_image=, |child=
    • mapframe-coordinates or mapframe-coord or coordinates or coord – Coordinates to use, instead of any on Wikidata. Use the {{Coord}} template, e.g. |coord={{Coord|12.34|N|56.78|E}}. Default: coordinates from Wikidata d:Property:P625
    • mapframe-caption – Caption for the map. Default: blank (or if |mapframe-geomask= is set, "Location in geomask's label")
    • mapframe-custom – Use a custom map instead of the automatic mapframe. Specify either a {{maplink}} template, or another template that generates a mapframe map, or an image name. If used, most mapframe parameters will be ignored. Default: not specified
    • mapframe-id or id or qid – Id (Q-number) of Wikidata item to use. Default: item for current page
    • mapframe-wikidata – Set to yes to show all shape/line features from OpenStreetMap. Default: not specified
  • Customise which features are displayed:
    • mapframe-point – Turn off display of point feature by setting to none. Force point marker to be displayed by setting to on. Default: not specified
    • mapframe-shape – Turn off display of shape feature by setting to none. Force display of shape by setting to on. Use an inverse shape (geomask) instead of a regular shape by setting to inverse. Default: not specified
    • mapframe-line – Turn off display of line feature by setting to none. Force display of line by setting to on. Default: not specified
    • mapframe-geomask – Wikidata item to use as a geomask (everything outside the boundary is shaded darker). Can either be a specific Wikidata item (Q-number), or a property that specifies the item to use (e.g. P17 for ದೇಶ (P17), P131 for ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿದೆ (P131)). Default: not specified
    • mapframe-switcher – set to auto or geomasks or zooms to enable Template:Switcher-style switching between multiple mapframes. Default: not specified
      • auto – switch geomasks found in ಸ್ಥಳ (P276) and ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿದೆ (P131) statements on the page's Wikidata item, searching recursively. E.g. an item's city, that city's state, and that state's country.
      • geomasks – switch between the geomasks specified as a comma-separated list of Wikidata items (Q-numbers) in the mapframe-geomask parameter
      • zooms – switch between "zoomed in"/"zoomed midway"/"zoomed out", where "zoomed in" is the default zoom (with a minimum of 3), "zoomed out" is 1, and "zoomed midway" is the average
  • Other optional parameters:
    • mapframe-frame-width or mapframe-width – Frame width. Default: 284
    • mapframe-frame-height or mapframe-height – Frame height. Default: 208
    • mapframe-shape-fill – Color used to fill shape features. Default: #5CE65C
    • mapframe-shape-fill-opacity – Opacity level of shape fill, a number between 0 and 1. Default: 0.1
    • mapframe-stroke-color or mapframe-stroke-colour – Color of line features, and outlines of shape features. Default: #008000
      • mapframe-line-stroke-color or mapframe-line-stroke-colour – Color of line features. Default: #ff0000
      • mapframe-shape-stroke-color or mapframe-shape-stroke-colour – Color of outlines of shape features. Default: #ff0000
    • mapframe-stroke-width – Width of line features, and outlines of shape features. Default: 2
      • mapframe-shape-stroke-width – Width of outlines of shape features. Default: 2
      • mapframe-line-stroke-width – Width of line features. Default: 5
    • mapframe-marker – Marker symbol to use for coordinates; see mw:Help:Extension:Kartographer/Icons for options. Default: natural
      • Can also be set to blank to override any default marker symbol
    • mapframe-marker-color or mapframe-marker-colour – Background color for the marker. Default: #62AB22
    • mapframe-geomask-stroke-color or mapframe-geomask-stroke-colour – Color of outline of geomask shape. Default: #555555
    • mapframe-geomask-stroke-width – Width of outline of geomask shape. Default: 1
    • mapframe-geomask-fill – Color used to fill outside geomask features. Default: #606060
    • mapframe-geomask-fill-opacity – Opacity level of fill outside geomask features, a number between 0 and 1. Default: 0.25
    • mapframe-zoom – Set the zoom level, from "1" (map of earth) to "18" (maximum zoom in), to be used if the zoom level cannot be determined automatically from object length or area. Default: Determined based on any of the parameters: |geohack-type=, |area_sqmi=, |area_km2=, |area_ha=, |area_acre=, |length_km=, |length_mi=, |width_km=, |width_mi=. Can be manually set by |mapframe-zoom=.
    • mapframe-length_km or mapframe-length_mi or mapframe-area_km2 or mapframe-area_mi2 – Determine zoom level by passing in object's length (in kilometres or miles) or area (in square kilometres or square miles). Default: |length_km= / |length_mi= / |area_km2= / |area_sqmi=
    • mapframe-frame-coordinates or mapframe-frame-coord – Alternate latitude and longitude coordinates for initial placement of map, using {{coord}}. Default: derived from item coordinates
    • mapframe-type – Set the type of the object, with the same usage as {{coord}}. Default: |geohack-type= or landmark
    • mapframe-population – Set the population, useful with type="city", for {{Infobox dim}}. Default: not specified

Any image of a map showing the location of the protected area can be used.

Display a marker on a map using a template and geographic coordinates

A marker can be superimposed on a map using one of a set of special map templates. To display a marker, the geographic coordinates must be specified using the {{Coord}} template inside the |coordinates= parameter. See the documentation for {{Location map}}. The parameters for this template map to a subset of the parameters used by {{Location map}}. A map template can be found using these sources:

All of the names begin with the words "Location map" followed by the area covered. The value you need to specify is the area name. The map template for Canada is Location map/data/Canada. In this case specify |map=Canada.
