Kannada Wikipedia’s 9th Anniversary - Minutes of Meeting

1. Kannada Wikipedia celebrated its 9th anniversary on 11th June 2012 at Centre for Internet Society, Dommalur,Bangalore.

2. The meet-up was attended by 15 people, some of whom started with the Kannada Wikipedia movement in its early stages.

3. After the early round of introduction, it was found that some people who were earlier in kn-wiki movement had dropped out of various reasons, consisting both technical & non-technical issues. Now that these issues are sorted and kn-wiki is well established, they gave confidence of joining the movement again.

4. Ismail, a journalist (Prajaavaani) who was an active member earlier, said that kn-wiki community can be developed further with proper outreach programs at schools and also colleges.

5. Wikimedia India Chapter has accepted to support the kn-wiki community for its outreach.

6. One of the kn-wiki community member Omshivaprakash had interviewed the Jnanapith awardee Dr. U. R. Ananthamurthy on the occasion of kn-wikipedia’s 9th anniversary and the video was shared with all those present.

7. There was a discussion on the micro project or an event for kn-wiki similar to INCOTM in en-wiki, which was supported by everybody. The use of mailing lists for any type of Outreach or information regarding micro events, is to be done.

8. Some topics that are in dire need for the kannada Wikipedia were discussed and those topics were found to be Books, Drama and Local person information.

9. As part of the Kannada Wikipedia anniversary, micro workshops were conducted at various places in the state.

1. Location : Seimens, Bangalore. Tejas Jain one of the active editors of kannada Wikipedia conducted the workshop. The duration was for 30 mins and around 15 ppl attended it. The workshop consisted of basics of editing Wikipedia, creating new user accounts. The workshop was intended at bringing the local people in IT sector into kannada Wikipedia.

2. Locaton : Mysore. Shravan Kulkarni conducted the workshop at a friend’s house. The workshop taught the attendees on what kannada Wikipedia is all about and a very basic funda of the kannada Wikipedia.

10. The final discussion for the day was regarding the spread of kannada Wikipedia through school textbooks. Now-a-days, the school textbooks contains a chapter on computer and internet. Meanwhile, we could also add a short paragraph on kannada Wikipedia there.

11. T-shirts, stickers and badges of kannada Wikipedia was distributed among all those present, with Wikimedia India chapter sponsoring the T-shirts.

12. The anniversary ended with the making of a video on kannada Wikipedia and cutting the anniversary special cake. The video contained various people involved with kn-wiki movement speak on the occasion of kn-wiki anniversary. The video was uploaded onto the youtube later. The link for the video
