ನನಗೊಂದು ಸಂದೇಹ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ (ಬಹುತೇಕವಾಗಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿಕಿಯಲ್ಲಿ) europe ಅನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲೂ ಯೂರೋಪ್ ಎಂದು ಬರೆಯುವ ರೂಢಿ ಇದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಯೂರೋಪ್‌ಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಐರೋಪ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಲ್ಲವೆ? ಅಥವ ನನ್ನ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಸುಳ್ಳೆ. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ನೀಡುತ್ತೀರ?

ಈ ರೀತಿ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಪದಗಳಿಂದ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಇದೆ. ಉದಾ:

user:arunpkshರವರ ಚರ್ಚೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಮಾತು. ಕೆಲವು ಆಂಗ್ಲಪದಗಳ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಮಾನ ಪದಗಳ ಬಗೆಗೆ ನೀವು ವಿವರಣೆ ಕೇಳಿರುವಿರಿ. ಸದ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದರ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಒಂದು ಕಾರ್ಯನೀತಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಪದವು ಮೂಲತ: ಭಾರತೀಯ ಪದವಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ, ಮೂಲ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಪದವನ್ನೆ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುವದು ಸರಿ ಎಂದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ "ಪುದುಚೆರಿ" ಈ ಮೂಲ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಫ್ರೆಂಚ್ ಆಡಳಿತಗಾರರು Pondicherry ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಇದೀಗ ಆ ಊರಿಗೆ ಪುದುಚೆರಿಯೆಂದು ಭಾರತೀಯ ಆಡಳಿತಗಾರರು ಪುನರ್ನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆದುದರಿಂದ ಪುದುಚೆರಿ, ಮುಂಬಯಿ, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಹಾಗೂ ಹಿಂದೂ ಮಹಾಸಾಗರ ಇಂತಹ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಪದಗಳನ್ನೇ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುವದು ಸರಿಯಾದ ಕಾರ್ಯನೀತಿ ಎಂದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ.
ಆದರೆ ಯುರೋಪಿಯನ್ ಮೂಲ ಪದ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸುವಾಗ ಇದು ಕಷ್ಟಕರ ಕಾರ್ಯನೀತಿ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಶ್ ಅಲ್ಲದ ಯುರೋಪಿಯನ್ ಪದಗಳು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಶ್‍ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇರೆಯೇ ಆಗಿ ಬರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತವೆ ಹಾಗು ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ಫ್ರಾನ್ಸ್ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾದ "ಪಾರಿ" ಅನ್ನು ಫ್ರೆಂಚ್ ಜನ "ಪಾರಿ" ಎಂದು ಕರೆದರೆ,ಆಂಗ್ಲರು "ಪ್ಯಾರಿಸ್" ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ನಾವು ಭಾರತೀಯರು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಶ್ ಅನ್ನು follow ಮಾಡುವದರಿಂದ ನಾವು ಪ್ಯಾರಿಸ್ ಎಂದೇ ಕರೆಯುವದು ಸರಿಯಾಗಬಹುದು. ಅದರಂತೆ 'ಯೇಶು" ಎನ್ನುವ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಶ್ ಜನ "ಜೀಸಸ್" ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನಾವೂ ಸಹ ಈಗ "ಜೀಸಸ್" ಎಂದೇ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ, ಅಲ್ಲವೆ? ಯುರೋಪಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಲಪದವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಆದುದರಿಂದ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಶ್‍ದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಚ್ಚರಿಸುವಂತೆ "ಯುರೋಪ್" ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುವದೇ ಸಾಧುವಾದದು.

  • ujjain - ಉಜ್ಜೈನಿ
  • Delhi - ದಿಲ್ಲಿ
  • bengal - ಬಂಗಾಳ

ಮತ್ತು: china - ಚೀನ

Dear Kassad, First, only users whose have account in Malayalam wikipedia AND has provided an interwiki link AND has accounts in multiple wikipedias will be affected by this kind of Bot update. Second only interwiki links on the userpage will be updated by this kind of bot update. Third, typically these users (one example is myself) will find it tedious to edit their user page in each of their wikis with links to each other wiki. So I thought it would be a favour to the user to run the bot on his user page. Hello. To facilitate steward granting of bot access, I'd like to implement the standard bot policy on this wiki. This will involve creating a redirect to this page from Project:Bot policy, and adding a line at the top noting that it is used here. In particular, this policy allows automatic acceptance of known interlanguage linking bots (if this page says that is acceptable), which form the vast majority of such requests.

The 2008 Board election committee announces the 2008 election process. Wikimedians will have the opportunity to elect one candidate from the Wikimedia community to serve as a representative on the Board of Trustees. The successful candidate will serve a one-year term, ending in July 2009.

Candidates may nominate themselves for election between May 8 and May 22, and the voting will occur between 1 June and 21 June. For more information on the voting and candidate requirements, see <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Board_elections/2008>.

The voting system to be used in this election has not yet been confirmed, however voting will be by secret ballot, and confidentiality will be strictly maintained.

Votes will again be cast and counted on a server owned by an independent, neutral third party, Software in the Public Interest (SPI). SPI will hold cryptographic keys and be responsible for tallying the votes and providing final vote counts to the Election Committee. SPI provided excellent help during the 2007 elections.

Hello. The standard bot policy was updated to allow global bots, which are now technically possible. These are trusted bots that will be given bot access on all wikis that allow global bots (the local policy or request page must explicitly allow them, or they won't get access on this wiki). The current requirements for global bots are:

  • the bot must only maintain interlanguage links or fix double-redirects;
  • the bot must already be active on several wikis, with long-term contributions to back up its trustworthiness.

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.

Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly

The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues .

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.
