Issues to deal with

Here is a list of issues, as I already stated before.

(1) Kannada fonts are not rendered correctly in Firefox running on latest distributions of Linux. The fonts look okay in other applications, e.g. text editors.

A screenshot is available here: http://www.ndeepak.info/.ljdeepix/wikipedia_linux.jpg

I have seen this on Ubuntu and Xandros. Others can discuss about Fedora Core, etc.

On both Fedora & Ubuntu, you need to do this:

MOZ_ENABLE_PANGO=1 export MOZ_ENABLE_PANGO Other distros may not have compiled firefox with pango & ctl enabled. (Pamri)

(2) The Support page talks about installing the Kannada font in ~/.fonts, running "fc-cache" and restarting app. Although this brings in Kannada font to Firefox, it still looks garbled. Therefore, the instructions are only partly helpful. We need to address the core problem of garbled font rendering.

The Browsing section covers the above instructions. You can also use konqueror (that comes with kde 3.2 & above) to view kannada. (Pamri)

(3) In view of 1 and 2 above, we need to write to developers of Firefox informing them of the problem. When I googled, I already found an instance where developers were intimated, but that covered only justified text. Here, rendering is bad in all cases.

Requesting opinions on this.

Its not a problem as such. In your case, the version of firefox has not been compiled with ctl (complex text language) support enabled, which enables it to use pango for rendering web pages with complex text. Or if it has been compiled, you need to export the above variables. Here is a list of bug reports filed: http://indlinux.org/wiki/index.php/MozillaBugs (Pamri)

(4) We need to be more objective when users complain of garbled text -- we first need to gather facts and analyze. Then, we need to offer solutions or take up the matter further if we cannot find a solution. Going forward, I would like to request members from making personal remarks when an issue is brought up.

This is a fuzzy topic and is not technical in nature, so please consider it to be advisory in nature, mentioned for the benefit of Wikipedia.

(5) Of all the major Windows operating systems, only XP has no issues with Kannada Wikipedia. However we would like to believe, many people still use Windows 98/ME/2000. 98/Me cannot display the text at all due to lack of Unicode support, and support in 2000 is limited, causing garbled display similar to that of Linux.

Idealism apart, can we make an alternative arrangement for users of these operating systems? Newspapers like Praja Vani etc. have a font-download section; the font works on these systems too. Is this possible (technically, as well as ideologically) to do this in this Wikipedia for the benefit of the masses?

Consider esp. schools in Karnataka, which may be running old computers with Windows 98 etc. installed. Accessible Wikipedia would be vastly helpful to them.

Please comment. I am willing to take initiative on this.

See my replies in between your comments. (--Pamri 07:01, ೧೧ April ೨೦೦೬ (UTC))

Some users had success with Windows 98 & 2000 after downloading IE 6 & installing arabic support, but YMMV. While we would like them to see/edit wikipedia, its technically a lot of pain to work on a techincal solution for a close source platform and also, against our primary objective. That said, we do have some coverters from unicode to iscii/nudi on kannada.sf.net that you can use. For schools, one could use something like knoppix/the indlinux milan live cd. Some people are working on such solutions already. Join the kannada ML at kannada.sf.net to discuss these issues. (Pamri)

(6) This is a separate request I am making for your consideration. Comments solicited. Wherever possible, let us use native Kannada words instead of Dravidised-Sanskrit. This is for the sole purpose of keeping the Kannada word-wealth intact, and I have no hatred against Sanskrit (I have studied it for 5 years). Of course, where a Sanskrit word is the only choice and/or it makes more sense to use it, I have no objections.

I haven't heard of Dravidised-Sanskrit, but if you want to replace it with native Kannada words, no one is preventing you from doing the same. (Pamri)

Please reply and we will discuss.

Thanks, Deepak

This was most probably a mistake, could somebody please unlock the page to enable discussion or please explain (in English). This page is actually semiprotected. So I am being able to edit here even though I am not an admin. I don't know why it has be sprotected. The history shows some disagreements between an admin and an anonIP in april2006. Currently, the only active admin on kn wiki is on wikibreak. And I don't know when he will be back. So unfortunately nobody can unprotect this page. However, the Village pump would be a place that you can start a discussion about this. Unicode on Windows mobile 5.0

There seems to be no info on this thing here. I could not activate unicode on my pocket PC. If anybody has any info on this, please do put it up in the Help page.

Some cleaning up

Do we need an entry for FC3?
