Hello Pamri, you are now an administrator. Please create a page for this wiki explaining what administrators are, and list yourself there. There are instructions on how to use your administrator powers in the administrators' how-to guide on the English Wikipedia.

I have also made you a bureaucrat so that you can turn other trusted users into admins. This is done using the Special:makesysop page. There are instructions on using this at m:Bureaucrat.

If you have any problems, let me know on my talk page at en, or leave a note on m:Requests for permissions. Good luck. Angela 12:59, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks a lot Angela. I have created the wikipedia administrator's page as you requested. Pamri

I uploaded a screenshot for you, see my talk page. Nickshanks ೦೩:೨೩, ೫ ಜನವರಿ ೨೦೦೫ (UTC)

I have been working on adding AAT rules to the font Kedage and creating a keyboard layout with HPN's help. There is a screenshot of it here. I have since fixed the problem with a vyanjana followed by the ii glyph you see there. Nickshanks ೨೩:೪೩, ೧೫ September ೨೦೦೫ (UTC)
Screenshot updated with today's efforts, taken on Mac OS X. URL same as above. If you can find me a nice font without copyright issues, I will gladly use it. Do you have any text which might be taxing I can take a screenshot of for you to check over? That would help me eliminate more errors. Nickshanks ೧೭:೦೩, ೧೬ September ೨೦೦೫ (UTC)

Apple Advanced Typography[ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ]

This is a little explanation of how AAT and OpenType differ. I don't think it's suitable for the en:Apple typography article, but could with modification be suitable for a separate article on AAT were one to be created.

How does AAT differ from OpenType?[ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ]

For Indic scripts, the only features that are necessary are glyph re-ordering and substitution. The feature set of AAT supports both of these. The feature set of OpenType only supports substitution (via the GSUB table). Because of this, on Windows the Uniscribe text engine handles re-ordering, what happens is this (simplified):

  1. The text engine examines a sequence of character codes in a document
  2. It re-orders character sequences (e.g. "vyanjana1 virama vyanjana2" to "vyanjana1 vyanjana2 virama")
  3. It then gets the corresponding glyph for each code from the font
  4. It reads and processes the OpenType rules for the font, sending the glyph list to the rule interpreter.

The thing that is important to note from the above is that Uniscribe re-orders the sequence of glyphs before sending the glyph list to the OpenType rule interpreter. It has to do this because OpenType rules cannot reorder glyphs.

OpenType's GSUB and GPOS tables are sub-divided into 'classes', for example rules in the GSUB class haln deal with halants at the ends of words. The classes that make up the GSUB and GPOS tables are processed in a strict order defined by Microsoft, whilst the rules within each class processed in order of appearance. For Kannada, that order is shown here.

Now contrast that with what happens on a Mac (where the text engine is called ATSUI):

  1. The text engine examines a sequence of character codes
  2. It then gets the corresponding glyph for each code from the font
  3. ATSUI then looks for OpenType rules within the font, if found:
    • It reads and processes the OpenType rules, sending the glyph list to the rule interpreter.
  4. If there are no OpenType rules, it looks for AAT rules, and if they are found:
    • It reads and processes the AAT rules, sending the glyph list to the rule interpreter.

Having explained how OpenType rules are processed, I should explain how AAT rules are processed. Firstly, there are no classes. The closest equivalent to OpenType's GSUB table is AAT's "morx" table. This table supports the following abilities: Non-contextual one-to-one and many-to-one substitution, contextual one-to-one substitution, contextual rearrangement of glyphs, and contextual insertion of new glyphs. By 'contextual' I mean that the glyphs that come before or after are important for triggering the action, but may not be affected by it. For example "May 12, 2002" could be changed to "12 May 2002" but "May 12," would not be changed to "12 May" (the year has to be present, but is not altered—this is the context for the rule).

These abilities I listed are simply given in the sequence you want them to be processed. AAT imposes no ordering requirements on the rule list (unlike OpenType's classes). You can combine them in any sequence you like to get the desired effect.

AAT also has many features not described here, such as group-based glyph kerning, and the ability to change the shape of a glyph using a morphing-like system, where the end-points are defined and any medial value is valid. With this you can then drag a slider in the user interface to make glyphs taller or shorter, drag another one to make them fatter or thinner, another one to increase the size of the serifs, etc. all independently of one another. There is nothing like this in OpenType.

With AAT you can also have point-size dependent effects, for example at 12 pt the horizontal and vertical strokes can be of similar width, but at 300pt, the stroke width variation could be quite great.

So why is OpenType Indic support broken on a Mac?[ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ]

I do not know whether, given that OpenType rules have been found, ATUSI re-orders the glyphs or not. It is of no consequence however, because only a few of the GSUB and GPOS classes are processed. The GSUB class liga for example is processed, this swaps f + i for fi, for example. liga is a Roman-script (and some others) ligature substitution. The classes within GSUB that are used for Indic language processing, such as blwf (below-base forms; vattus), and psts (post-base substitution; conjunct swaras) are completely ignored.

In summary, some of the GSUB and GPOS classes are supported, but not many, and not the ones used for Indic scripts.

Hi Pamri. A while ago I made a request for a bot bit to be set for User:SieBot at ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯ:ಅರಳಿ_ಕಟ್ಟೆ#Bot_bit_request_SieBot. Could you please set the bit? Thanks. Siebrand ೦೯:೪೦, ೩ September ೨೦೦೭ (UTC)

Hi. Because you appear to be absent, and/or have not responded to my request in a week or more, I have repeated the above request at meta:Requests_for_bot_status#Bot_status_requests, so a steward could take care of it. Cheers! Siebrand ೦೧:೧೯, ೧೪ September ೨೦೦೭ (UTC)

Hi, sorry for writing in English. I'm writing to ask you, as a bureaucrat of this wiki, to translate and review the notification that will be sent to all users, also on this wiki, who will be forced to change their user name on May 27 and will probably need your help with renames. You may also want to help with the pages m:Rename practices and m:Global rename policy. Thank you, Nemo ೧೬:೪೮, ೩ ಮೇ ೨೦೧೩ (UTC)

Your admin status[ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಿ]

Hello. I'm a steward. A new policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus recently. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.

You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on knwiki, where you are a bureaucrat and administrator. Since knwiki does not have its own administrators' rights review process, the global one applies.

If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights, and demonstrate a continued requirement to maintain these rights.

We stewards will evaluate the responses. If there is no response at all after approximately one month, we will proceed to remove your administrative rights. In cases of doubt, we will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact us on m:Stewards' noticeboard.
